Who is Kirk Spencer?
What is the Kirk Spencer Tournament?
In Loving memory we bring to you, the West Linn All-Phase wrestling club's Kirk Spencer Open. This tournament is to honor an exceptional human being and coach. Kirk was an athlete and a graduate of West Linn High School. He came to West Linn as an adolescent looking for a direction and he always said wrestling changed his life. Kirk coached football as well as wrestling, but his true passion was wrestling. Kirk loved what wrestling gives an athlete:
"There's a great brotherhood that goes along with wrestling. That brotherhood develops strong character, a good work ethic and close friendships that will last a lifetime." - Coach Kirk Spencer
In addition to coaching WL youth football since 1994 as well as the freshman football team at WLHS in 2003, Kirk ran the youth wrestling club here in West Linn for the last 8 of the 12 years he was involved in the club, until he passed away suddenly in 2004 of sudden cardiac arrest. Kirk was adored by all who knew him because he was a motivator. Kirk's gift to the world was his ability to be an adult kid and make everyone around him feel the joy of life and sport. He was able to get down to a kid's level and relate to them, keeping them coming back for more. He was a fun-loving, sharp witted, genuine human with amazing integrity. His sole purpose was to help everyone around him laugh and become better. Kirk was a humble, irresistible person that caught you and hooked you with his amazing big grin. Everything that came out of his mouth was to either make you laugh, make you laugh at yourself or help you. Kirk went above and beyond to help others, spending most of his time and money to do whatever it took to reach a kid, help friends and family or any stranger that needed a hand.
The West Linn Mat Club became the Kirk Spencer Mat club after he passed and recently merged with All-Phase. Kirk thought highly of Coach Kevin Keeney and was a friend of his as well as occasionally combined practices with All Phase. Kirk would be very happy to have these dedicated, motivated amazing coaches from All-Phase, come to West Linn and give our kids an opportunity of a life-time. Our newly merged club, is over-seen by a board of all of Kirk's best friends and will seal our commitment to be one of the most competitive wrestling programs in the state.
